US Justice Department Intervenes in Lawsuit to Block California's Redistricting Plan

The US Justice Department have officially joined a legal challenge initiated by California Republicans, aiming to prevent the state's newly approved congressional redistricting map.

This legal action, submitted to federal court, challenges the map supported by the state's Democratic governor, which was created in reaction against a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.

"The state's electoral map represents a brazen power grab that tramples on civil rights and mocks the democratic process," stated the US attorney general.

Democrats have voiced assurance that the redistricting plan will withstand court challenges.

"The plaintiffs were defeated in the election and they are likely to also lose in court," stated a representative for the governor.

Legal Basis

The legal challenge asserts that California's map wrongfully utilized racial considerations to heavily favor Latino communities in contravention of the US Constitution.

"Race cannot be used as a substitute to further partisan goals, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," argued a high-ranking representative from the Civil Rights Division.

Political Context

The legal battle constitutes the major response by the Democratic party in the continuing redistricting war that began in Texas and has spread across various parts of the country.

In contrast to elsewhere, where GOP-controlled legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed voter approval, which it received with nearly 65% of the vote.

National Implications

Democrats need to flip just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's congressional elections.

The party that holds the controlling share will shape the final years of the sitting president's term, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its political program or encounter opposition, investigations and possible additional obstacles.
