TikTok Content Creators Fueling Unofficial Market for Unapproved Weight-Loss Drug
A shadow economy for unlicensed weight-loss drugs is being driven by social media fitness personalities and sellers on messaging platforms, according to recent findings.
Investigational Drug Gaining Traction Via Social Media
Retatrutide, which remains in research studies, is being advertised by social media influencers for its alleged fat-burning effects. Followers are encouraged to contact these profiles privately for source information, while also receiving discount codes.
Active Trade on Messaging Platforms
Additionally, a robust market exists on Telegram, where groups with thousands of participants share comparison images, injection guides and claims of rapid British shipping. Sellers market the drug there before directing customers to WhatsApp for transactions.
Understanding The Experimental Drug
This medication is an investigational injectable developed by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The treatment targets three intestinal hormones – glucagon-like peptide-1, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and glucagon. Preliminary studies suggest it could help patients lose up to a quarter of their total weight. Nicknamed the “triple G”, the substance is being promoted digitally as the next Ozempic.
Medical Professionals Express Worries
However, doctors and chemists have cautions that the sale of what remains an unlicensed drug in the UK is a cause for concern and could lead to users administering products of unknown origin.
Several experts stated the popularity for retatrutide could be linked to the increasing cost of approved slimming treatments such as Mounjaro.
Legal Position and Implementation
Selling the unapproved drug on TikTok or messaging apps is prohibited in the UK, as it is an unlicensed medication that must not be marketed or distributed for personal consumption under the British medical regulations.
Several influencers try to circumvent the rules by referring to the drug as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. Retatrutide is not a restricted substance, but promotion and distribution can still breach pharmaceutical, marketing, and consumer regulations, potentially leading to penalties, legal action or prison.
Service Response and Content Elimination
According to the social media company, the platform has removed violative material and prohibited associated hashtags and search suggestions. The organization said it was dedicated to maintaining the platform secure and investing in enhancing enforcement strategies.
Digital Trading Activities
Research also discovered groups with up to nine thousand participants selling retatrutide using Telegram's integrated search feature, which functions like a public directory. Entering “retatrutide” immediately displays groups with thousands of members, populated with photos of slimming results, glowing reviews and step-by-step instructions for mixing or injecting at home.
Within minutes of joining one community, a seller shared WhatsApp details, where most purchases take place. The vendor sent an guidebook and promised shipping within 48 hours. When questioned whether the substance was genuine, one seller responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a photo of a supposed laboratory certificate. Not one asked about body mass, medical conditions or previous experience.
Product Information and Pricing
Within these groups, messages show black plastic parcels with postal service stickers, stating to contain fresh supplies. One communication read: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”
Customers can choose between dry substance containers, mixed at home with sterile water, or ready-to-use injectors usually priced at 160 pounds for 20mg. When asked how much time a injector should be used, sellers give contradictory responses varying between a several days to “depends on your body”.
Service Moderation and Security Measures
A spokesperson for Telegram stated it regularly moderated harmful material on its platform including material that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The organization added that it eliminated “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.
Healthcare Professional Warnings
“Individuals are injecting substances they can’t verify. Although the research behind this drug is sound, these digital products may not contain what they claim,” said a pharmacy expert, the director of pharmaceutical services at a pharmacy service.
Dr Crystal Wyllie of an online medical service linked the surge in interest to current price rises for authorized weight-loss medications such as Mounjaro. “With costs rising, individuals are using online platforms. But counterfeit treatments are highly risky. You cannot know what’s inside or whether the environment they were produced in was sterile,” she explained.
Her team has previously encountered patients injured by personal administration from unconfirmed sources. “We understand the frustration, but purchasing from Telegram or communication platforms is gambling with your well-being,” stated Wyllie. “These materials could be contaminated or improperly measured.”
Manufacturer Position
A spokesperson from the pharmaceutical company stated retatrutide was in third stage clinical trials and had not been reviewed or authorized by any regulatory agency globally. “Consequently at this time no one can sell [it] for human use,” they said, adding that any item “falsely representing itself as a company investigational product not yet approved … may expose users to possibly serious medical dangers”.
