Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside France's air force in a coordinated attack on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory used by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The facility, identified by reconnaissance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was located in mountainous terrain just to the north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a number of access tunnels leading to the site... early reports indicate the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the strike on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed extremist governance over significant areas in Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action demonstrates the UK's leading role, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eliminate any re-emergence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

UK warplanes have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of the group after its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank the personnel of our armed forces participating in this operation for their expertise and their valour," he said. "They were among thousands of British troops stationed over the holidays. This operation, to remove terrorist threats who pose a risk to our security, demonstrates how our armed forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure within its borders and powerful internationally."

Last December, the US military conducted what it termed a "major assault" against IS targets in Syria, subsequent to an assault claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The U.N. estimates Islamic State still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in both countries.
