Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opener Crawley suggested he was not familiar with comments from captain Stokes regarding the dressing room as no place for "weak men".

Stokes made this message in several interviews following his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series against the Australians previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where England now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain noted he had let his sentiment to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions over the past two days that I required," said the England leader.

But, after the opener made 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "weak men" observation after his side were beaten in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad afterwards took a break to Noosa between the second and third Tests.

Prior to this match, Stokes said his team had held "honest" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the messaging from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," said Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of something special going into this game."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's wicket late on Saturday was part of a decisive three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side 207-6 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435.

This means, the home team require just four more wickets on the last day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 advantage with three Tests.

Defeat will extend the English team's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes defeat.

This series is set to be decided in only eleven days of play – after England losing the first two Tests in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," admitted Crawley. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been tough. They're a formidable side. It was inevitably hard touring here to face them. They were the favourites and they've proven why."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

Although Crawley's innings in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his short-term future in the England team, Pope appears under threat for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 runs in the team's second innings on Saturday, extending his poor record versus Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top order in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

But, the opener insisted any suggestion Pope is under the microscope comes from "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is talk externally. There's no discussion like that regarding Pope amongst the players," he concluded.
